| Highways:
Interstate 59 traverses the county from south to north. Alabama Highway 35 serves the Fort Payne area and has been four-laned from Fort Payne to Rainsville. Four-lane construction continues from Rainsville to Scottsboro, Alabama where it will intersect with US Highway 72 and provide four-lane access to Memphis, Tennessee. Alabama Highways 40 and 75 serve the Henagar area. Highway 40 runs east to west, terminating at Interstate 59 and US Highway 11. Alabama Highway 75 runs from the southwest to the northeast bisecting the county. It is the main thoroughfare for many larger towns in DeKalb County including Henagar and Rainsville. Work is in progress to make this highway a four-lane from Albertville, AL to Trenton, GA. Distance to major Interstate and US Highways:
Plans are in the works for the construction of a new limited-access Interstate Highway from Memphis, Tennessee to Atlanta, Georgia. A proposed corridor study has been completed. The highway's route through the county has been established south of Fort Payne and north of Collinsville near the Portersville community and going west toward the town of Lakeview on Alabama Highway 75. A new Interstate interchange is being designed for Fort Payne and plans for five-laning US 11 in North Fort Payne are also in the works. DeKalb County boasts 208 miles of state highways and 42 miles of interstate highways. Fort Payne's municipal airport, with its 5,080-foot runway, employs a full-service fixed-base operator. The runway and taxiway are lighted, and the airport uses an automated weather observation system, a non-directional beacon approach and a GPS approach. The facility supplies fuel for planes and jets and offers charter service. |
