DeKalb County, Alabama is located in Northeast Alabama near the intersection of the Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama state lines. The county's topographic features include the Lookout Mountain and Sand Mountain plateaus of the Appalachians and a major valley region lying between the two.

The county's length generally runs southwest to northeast. The topography of the county is gently rolling on top of the plateaus and ridges with several small ridges within the valley area and steep slopes on the faces of the plateaus.

The area east of the Sand Mountain plateau is drained by tributaries of the Coosa River drainage basin, with the principal tributaries being Big Wills Creek and Little River.

Several creeks and tributaries of the Tennessee River drain the area on the Sand Mountain Plateau. Soil composition varies from shallow and sandy on top of the plateaus to limestone-based along the plateaus' escarpments to clay and sandy loam in the valley. Chert formations make up the ridges.

Its proximity to major Southeast markets has made DeKalb County attractive to such industries as Earthgrains (Sara Lee Bakery Group); Siemens Westinghouse; GameTime, Inc.; Russell Athletic; Vulcraft, Inc.; Ferguson Enterprises, Inc. and others.
